Bamboo Pavilion
Location: Damushan Tea Plantation, Songyang
Completion: 2015.01
Bamboo Pavilion was the first open public space in Damushan tea plantation as a resting pavilion for local tea farmers as well as viewing platform for tourists. Our design started with a series of pavilions and platforms not only to meet different functional purposes, but also to respect and respond to the local village context and the ecological environment of the tea plantation.
We used local bamboo as construction material to create a light structure easy for handling and assembling. Raised platforms with bamboo pavements undulate above and below the tea field, creating public spaces with an open view or a semi-private terrace within the tea fields. With an arrangement of density gradient, an analysis of structural pressure and tension determines the integrated structure of roof and wall system.
The project could serve as a prototype to introduce a new public area to this tea plantation. This first pavilion soon attracted a lot of visitors from the area, and has hosted many events and ceremonies in the field.
