Xiaopu Culture Center is a 2000 square meter complex located on a former industrial lot in the village that hosts two galleries, five artist residencies and a supply shop. Here we introduce the tangram concept of formulating a program into a layout with various functions, with public programs on the ground level divided by courtyards and residencies and studios on the second level with a roof terrace. The tangram puzzle piece layout creates an intersection of artist studio space and double-height gallery space: allowing for individual functionality while maintaining a visual connection. Therefore, a gallery visitor going through the art exhibition may also catch glimpses of artists at work. This building performs as a puzzle for visitors to explore constantly. Dark grey corrugated metal is used as an exterior to remain within the project budget and also as a reminder of the former industrial context. Xiaopu Culture Center has transformed this former industrial lot into a cultural complex, a catalyst bringing new possibilities for local community.
